Success is in the person, not the place.
Although this is also a quote from the book, I thought it was generally a pretty good theme. At the beginning of the book, Ed equates success to leaving home. Ed suggests that he is a failure because he is a failure because he did not leave town like all his siblings did. I think that he gets this from his mom who regards success as moving away from home. Near the end of the book, his mother tells Ed that she always wanted to move away with Ed's father. Ed's father could never manage to do it and she is still bitter about it. Ed is much like his father which seems to make his "failure" especially painful to her. "You... you could be as good as any of them... but you're still here and you'll be here fifty years from now."

When put in difficult situations, even the ordinary person can become extraordinary.
He we have plain old Ed Kennedy. Usually he's just an average guy. Put him in the situation of a bank robbery however and he becomes spectacular. The bank robbery is a perfect setup for the cards. Of course, we learn that near the end of the book that this was all set up. This shows that pretty much anyone can make the world a better place.
