Daryl and Keith: A hitman duo sent by whoever sends the aces. Both are very argumentative, especially with each other, yet rely on the other to finish whatever task is put before them. "everyone suffers for mankind"(107)
Gavin Rose: A boy Ed helps to bond with his older brother for the second Ace. Gavin is said in the novel to be a bully or jerk, whenever he isn't fighting with his brother, he is doing some form of prank or vandalism. "I want to kill him. I want to kill him. I want. To kill. Him"(170)
Angelina: Angelina is the daughter of a woman on Ed's first Ace. Her mother was being raped by her father many nights. Each time she would go on the house porch and cry, waiting for someone to help. "Are you here to save us?"(78)
Angie Carruso: Was a woman on Ed's second Ace. Every Thursday, at the park, she would buy each one of her kids some ice-cream. It didn't take long for Ed to realize in these moments that she never thought for herself. "I was the easy one when I was younger. Now I've got three kids and I'm alone"(173)
Marv: One of Ed's closest friends to play cards with. He is told to be very stingy, yet hardworking when it comes down to it. He is one of the majority of Ed's friends to always feel free to give a snark comment, especially if you make fun of his car. "That-and I love my car"(13)
Ritchie: One of Ed's card playing group. He never really cares about too much. Always has an easy going attitude with everything he does. However he is always up for making fun of Marv every time he has the chance. "Why not Ed. I'll go to church with you...for a laugh right?"(148)
Ed's Mother: A snark woman who always looks down on Ed. She will never hesitate to make him feel bad about himself, especially after Ed's father died. Even so she always comes to him for help, only because he's the only one of her children living close. "Believe it or not-It take a lot of love to hate you like this"(245)

Ed Kennedy: Ed is the main character and narrator of this book. He is a fairly normal 19-year-old who works as a taxi driver. He lives with his old dog, named Doorman, in a not so good town. At the beginning of the book, he was the hero of a local bank robbery, leading him to become a little more well-known in his town. After the robbery, he started to receive ace cards that had three items on them that were connected to different people. For each ace card, Ed made a difference on the lives of three people.
"'I did it because you are the epitome of ordinaries, Ed.' He looks at me seriously. 'And if a guy like you can stand up and do what you did for all those people, well, maybe everyone can." (353)

Audrey: Audrey is one of Ed's best friends. She is a really pretty girl that Ed is in love with, but she is not in love with him at the beginning. Audrey has some issues opening up to others and truly loving them due to the fact her family greatly hurt her. "She never lets any love get in the way. I think she had a family once, but it was one of those beat-the-crap-out-of-each-other situations. There's no shortage of them around here. I think she loved them, and all they ever did was hurt her. That's why she refuses to love." (23)
Sophie: Sophie is one of the first people Ed helps out. She is a beautiful young girl who trains countless hours for races she runs in. She wakes up early every morning to go running barefoot. She is quiet, but a very good athlete. She starts out running races with tennis shoes on, but Ed helps give her the confidence to run barefoot, the way she likes too. "The spiked shoes come off Sophie's feet. She looks at them and sighs, 'I thought these were meant to be good luck." (69)

Milla: Milla is another person Ed helps. Milla is a fragile old lady that has the same daily routine every day. She believes Ed is her old lover, Jimmy. She calls him by the name Jimmy. Ed fills a space in her life by visiting her and doing activities with her that she enjoys.
"Then, with stunning realization clambering across her face, she smiles at me. She smiles with such incredible warmth and says, 'I knew you'd come, Jimmy.'" (50)
Thomas O'Reilly: Thomas is a priest, although he is not your traditional priest. Thomas is a kind-hearted priest who tries to help the troubled in his neighborhood. At one point not many people attended Thomas's church, so Ed made an effort to get more people to attend his church.
"'Meet the Parkinsons', he says. 'They're bloody useless.' His comment shocks me. I've never heard a priest talk like this before." (143)
Bernie: Bernie is an older man who owns a movie theatre in the town Ed lives in. Bernie is a pretty lonely man, as no one really comes to his movie theatre. Bernie helps Ed figure out what the movie titles on the last ace card mean.
"'God, you're my first customer in weeks!'" (248)
Doorman: The doorman is Ed's very old dog. He comforts Ed and "talks" to Ed. He is a pretty lazy dog who likes coffee.
"Instead, the Doorman's snoring and his back leg is stretched across the card on the floor. I couldn't get my hands on it now even if I wanted to. I don't like moving the Doorman when he's asleep." (266)
